How Eneco.nl puts sustainability at the center

WUA research shows how Eneco.nl strategically uses sustainability to attract consumers on smartphone and desktop with consistent themes and credible evidence.

How Eneco.nl puts sustainability at the center

In November 2016, WUA conducted a large-scale study for the second time in 2016 among consumers looking for a new energy contract. 200 respondents used their desktop for this, 200 respondents did this on a smartphone. The 400 respondents in total ranked Nuon.nl first with 69 points. Essent.nl (67 points) and Eneco.nl (65 points) finished second and third. The gap with the rest of the field is quite large at five points.

In this article we zoom in on the experiences of respondents who used their smartphone to search for a new energy supplier. For the Brand theme, one of the three themes central to the WUA Web Performance Model, we see that Eneco.nl performs above average at first impression. Putting sustainability at the center plays an important role here. In this article we show through three examples how Eneco incorporates sustainability well on its website.

1. Sustainability appears everywhere on the website

Conscious energy use is a topical theme. It can deliver nice monthly savings in your wallet and sustainability also plays an important role. Energy suppliers like to show how they contribute to a sustainable society. Eneco.nl clearly responds to this on its website. The theme appears throughout the entire site. For example, it's reflected in the menu ("Energy & Future: "what can you do", "what do we do ourselves"). The partnership with WWF ("Partners in sustainable energy and nature conservation") also appears prominently on the website.

2. Eneco.nl provides clear evidence

Eneco.nl recently scored very highly in a study by Consumentenbond and Greenpeace, among others, on green electricity generation among energy companies. The research results, packaged in clear text and supporting images, get a prominent place on the website. The explicit attention to Eneco's sustainability doesn't go unnoticed by respondents: "They do their best to think as green as possible," notes one of the respondents who participated in the study.

3. Eneco thinks along with consumers

Eneco doesn't just tell what the company itself does for sustainable operations, but also involves consumers in this. The energy supplier does this by making consumers aware of their energy consumption and immediately linking smart saving tips to it. Not only does the sustainable mindset play a role here, but the company also cleverly responds to the financial savings this can bring. For example, Eneco gives consumers smart saving tips to reduce their energy consumption. You choose one of the various saving themes (for example "Cooling and freezing" or "Standby consumption and electricity") after which Eneco.nl immediately shows a number of handy tips based on which you can save immediately.
